When now is the right

'People don’t decide their future. They decide their habits and the habits decide their future.’ - A statement that struck me during one of my daily endeavours of dedicatedly investing time in scrolling through my social media feed as much as my fingers allow me to. Surprisingly, those two simple sentences managed to stop my motion, and invest more thought into actually comprehending them.

The desire to be aware of every scenario which is lined up to encounter. The attitude of looking forward to the hereafter instead of cherishing the now. The closely linked hope for a greater, happier, and more rewarding time ahead as the present can seemingly never be enough. Simply, the craving for everything untouched and pristine.

That being said, I have many questions about our everlasting obsession with the future. Why do we always end up shifting our focus to times which can solely be reached, if we ultimately underline the importance of the present? The now. The time which needs every percentage of our attention and contribution. When do we plan to reach the future outlooks, which constantly keep us occupied in the end? But most importantly and in association with the quote: How do we intend to reach the prospective steps so thoroughly engraved into our system?

I wish to achieve this. I hope to reach there. The number of day-to-day activities to actually relish present emotions are scarce. Not only are they a bare focus, but unconsciously the least important incentives to feel what we feel and to live how we desire to live. Hence, we much rather want to put energy into everything which is a possibility but not a reality. But, what if we start shifting our attention to reality? The now. What if we change our approach to defining our practices today in order to shape our later.

I think most of us can agree on the fact that there is nothing more difficult than building a habit, which goes beyond our accustomed routines and acknowledged way of living. As oftentimes we are creatures of habits, who do not wish to be compelled to change, the idea of introducing shifts to our manners is easier said than done. However, at the same time, we long for a future full of predefined expectations and requirements. And funny enough, not seldom do those anticipations demand our hearts to be at present. In our being.

And yet, the theory is simpler than the execution. Hence, it is not that we do not strive to stay in the momentum. It is certainly not that we do not seek habits, which manifest our intentions. Time and time again, it is our overthinking nature, it is the element of drama we unknowingly go after, and it is the implicit need to always be in the driving seat in our very own trajectory called life, which hinders us from guiding our senses for the future by solely steering ourselves through the present.

I consider myself as

  • past-focused

  • present-focused

  • future-focused
